Gallery of 19th and 20th century European and American Art
The Gallery, a new section of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, opened its doors to the public in August 2006. The setting up of the Gallery was the next step in the development of the Museum, following the opening of a new building for the Museum of Private Collections in 2005 and the Museion Centre of Aesthetic Training for children and young people in 2006. The appearance of the Gallery is a continuation of the plan to surround the main building, which was erected from a design by the architect Roman Klein in 1912, with a "museum town", something the museum's founder, Professor Ivan Vladimirovich Tsvetaev dreamed of in his day.

The Tatarstan State Museum of ine Arts, Museum of the Art of Asian Peoples, Tretyakov Gallery, Nizhnegorod State Museum of Fine Arts, the Smolensk State Museum, and the Academy of Arts contributed works to this catalogue of an exhibition that publishes works from various periods of Roerich's half century of painting: scenes of ancient history, legend, and mythology; set, costume, and curtain design for theatrical works such as Borodin's Prince Igor, Stravinsky's Rites of Spring; and a recurrent theme of Roerich's art: Asia, its severe and beautiful landscape, harmonious settlements, and solemn shrines. As much of a philosopher as an artist, Roerich spent much of his life pursuing and expressing a higher ideal, which he saw in myths and legends and in the timeless landscapes of mountain peoples. At first glance his paintings can seem monotonous but upon closer look one sees the nuances of color and subtle ways in which Roerich interwove the human and the natural worlds. Vadimir Voronchenko is a well-known businessman, art collector and connoisseur who serves as chairman of The Link of Times Foundation and as director of the Faberge Museum in St Petersburg. He is on the board of trustees of several major international institutions, among them the Paris Biennale, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts and the Carl Faberge International Jeweller Contest, where he serves as co-chairman. In 2004 The Link of Times Foundation purchased Malcolm Forbes's famous collection of Faberge masterpieces from his heirs. Over the following ten years, the foundation continued acquiring Russian decorative and fine art of the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries at an unprecedented scale. "On 17 (29) August 1898, the scene in the former Carriage Yard near the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Volkhonka was unusually animated. Members of the royal family had just arrived. Professors and students of Moscow University, artists, young ladies from the Alexandro-Mariinsky Institute, government officials, and members of the City Duma, the nobility and the merchantry had taken their places on two specially installed stands. On one stand the Moscow intelligentsia was congregated: ladies in white dresses and hats, gentlemen in dark morning suits. The other stand was resplendent with frothy lace and the aiguillettes of military uniforms. The occasion was the laying of the foundation stone for a new Moscow museum, created on public funds, the Museum of Fine Arts named in honour of Emperor Alexander III and attached to the Imperial Moscow University."
